Winter Visit, Australia

15th of July 2010

Syafiq and his family came to Sydney to visit Wani during her winter break. 

Syafiq and Wani had the opportunity to perform at the Malaysian Hall in Randwick for a music and poetry event.

It was their first performance after the engagement, as well as their first performance together in Australia.

They decided to get married.

Journey Resumes, Kuala Lumpur International Airport

15th of February 2010

Wani flew off to Sydney alone, leaving her most beloved family, newly-engaged fiancé, and dearest friends behind to embark on a new adventure.

This was recorded in Shah Alam a few hours before Wani left Malaysia to further her postgraduate studies in Australia. She had a terrible cough and couldn’t project her voice as usual, hence Syafiq took her part with his cello.

Malam Terakhir

Untuk suatu jangkamasa
dijamah sepetik jari atau selamanya,
tiba malam terakhir
menghadam nafas rumput bersama dia. 

Di sini ruang 
kami mula menyatu bunyi dan rasa,
lagi kami datang 
namun bukan dua insan yang lama.

Gering menoreh suara senandungku,
lalu aku bisu.

Nah- spontan dia membusur panahku,
dengan bebenang ekor kuda ia menyanyi bait-baitku.

Malam labuh jadi subuh,
bangkit pagi belum mati,
selagi dipinjam Tuhan nyawa,
dia kekal di kemuncak jiwa.

Wani translated “Cello & Bow” into “Bow & Arrow” thus “Panah & Busur”. The song just came to her and she wrote and composed it for Syafiq. It is short, yet it tells the story of how they came together. It has been their song since then.

Wani was backpacking with her songwriter friend Rina and her cousins Farah and Saerah, when Syafiq suddenly showed up on their final day there, all the way from Selangor, to celebrate his 25th birthday with Wani though just for a short while.

Wani figured Syafiq might be the one.

Syafiq began to play cello and percussions for Wani.

He ‘learned’ Wani through her songs and lyrics.

They spent more and more time sharing music and thoughts with each other.

Then somewhere in between, something happened.

Syafiq, Wani, Fynn and Tri shared the stage for the first time.

It was also their first road trip.

A certain bond was developed between these four art and music enthusiasts. It wasn’t exactly love, or friendship, or any label people normally put on one and another. It cannot be described by words; it was simply a feeling of comfort and carefreeness, of wanting to stay together, perhaps even grow old together.

Celebrating a friend’s birthday - Fadza.

Wani was introduced to Syafiq’s family by coincidence, while Syafiq got to know Wani’s circle of friends.

That night they played music together, the two of them, for the first time.

Earth Hour 2009, Sunway

28th of March 2009

Wani and her songwriter friend Ana went to Sunway to meet Fynn who was reciting her poems at an Earth Hour event. The three of them discussed on organizing Hari Bintang Jatuh 2009. Fynn was accompanied by Tri and his best friends, Azim and Syafiq.

Syafiq and Wani met again for the second time.

They were single.

Beginning this date, Fynn, Ana, Wani, Tri and Syafiq spent many days rehearsing together for the event.

Hari Bintang Jatuh 2008, Kuala Lumpur

25th of October 2008

An independent art event where Syafiq and Wani met for the first time.

Syafiq was one of the musicians (he played for Fynn, a poet, along with Fynn’s husband, Tri) while Wani was the event organizer.

It was Wani’s 24th birthday.

They did not speak to each other except “hi”.

They were both seeing other people.
